A shipping container is a container with strength suitable to withstand shipment, storage, & handling. Specific dimensions and capacity may vary depending on the container manufacturer, the age of the container and the container owner.The specifications listed in different types are, however, representative.

1. Standard (Dry Storage) Containers

These are the most commonly used shipping containers; they come in various dimensions standardized by ISO. They are used for shipping of dry materials and come in size of 20ft, 40 ft and 10ft. Mostly used dimensions are 20ft and 40ft. Containers with smaller dimensions are very rarely used. Standard containers are manufactured from either aluminum or steel.

2. Open Top Containers

3. Flat rack Containers

Flat rack containers are especially suitable for heavy loads and cargo that needs loading from the top or sides, such as pipes and machinery. You will find collapsible containers and non-collapsible containers with or without walls. Flat rack containers are manufactured from steel and come in 20' and 40' sizes.

4. High Cube Containers

High cube dry containers ensure that you gain an extra foot in height compared with standard dry containers. The high cube dry containers are ideal for light, voluminous or bulky cargo. These extra volume containers are made in 40' and sometimes in 45’ sizes in steel and aluminum.

5. Platform Containers

Platform containers are without sides, ends and roof. They are used for odd-sized cargo which does not fit on or in any other type of container. The floor structure has extremely high loading capacity and makes it possible to concentrate extremely heavy weights on smaller area.

6. Refrigerated Containers

These are temperature regulated shipping containers that always have a carefully controlled low temperature. They are exclusively used for shipment of perishable substances like fruits and vegetables over long distances. It is fitted with a refrigeration unit which is connected to the carrying ship's electrical power supply.

7. Bulk Containers

Bulk containers are used in particular for transporting bulk cargo, such as grain, feedstuffs, and spices. However, they may also be used for transporting general cargo.

There are three loading hatches in the roof. On the door side, there are two discharge hatches, which are sometimes equipped with short discharge tubes for guiding the bulk cargo. Alternatively, two unloading hatches may be mounted in the doorways, for emptying the containers.

8. Tank

Tank containers are used for liquid cargoes, such as:
Foodstuffs: juices, spirits, oils
Chemicals: hazardous materials, fuels, toxic substances, corrosion protection agents

Tank containers must be at least 80% full, to prevent dangerous surging of the liquids in transit. On the other hand, not be over 95% full, or there will not be sufficient space for thermal expansion.

If the cargo requires temperature-controlled transport, tank containers can be equipped with insulation or heating. The temperature of the cargo may be precisely controlled using temperature sensors.
