United States: Savannah 's Garden City Terminal posted a 13.6%year-on-year increase in October box traffic to a record 311,759 TEU, announced the Georgia Port Authority (GPA).
 
Other records set in October said the GPA, were the highest number of truck gate moves at Garden City Terminal (213,445), and the most containers moved by rail via CSX and Norfolk Southern.
 
GPA executive director Curtis Foltz said that "Strong growth across all key sectors of our business is an indication that our ports are reaching a larger and more diverse customer base.”
 
Said GPA chairman James Walters: "To accommodate continued growth, we are taking steps to increase capacity from 4.5 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) per year to 6.5 million."
 
The Brunswick autoport moved 224,197 roll-on/roll-off units this fiscal year. Combined with vehicles moved via Savannah's Ocean Terminal, that came to 232,009 units, up 3.4% fiscal year to date, while October volume was up 1.4% to 63,218 units.
 
Separately, the GPA board approved construction of Gate 8, a USD 10.2 million project that will serve as the third major truck interchange at Garden City Terminal. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2015.
